You want to coordinate outfits. You don’t need to all match, but you want to look coordinated. Choose colors that are not too close to skin tones, pastels, greys and creams are great choices. Also, if it’s fall, go for fall colors. Christmas season, go for those reds and greens! Maybe no antlers.

What Should I Wear For A Family Portrait?

How Does It All Work?

My family sessions are designed to be relaxed, enjoyable, and tailored to your family’s unique story. My sessions typically lasts about 45-50 minutes — just enough time to capture a variety of genuine moments and beautiful posed portraits but without the rush!

I love to focus on candid, natural interactions that showcase your family’s personality and sense of humor. At the same time, we’ll include some classic posed shots — everyone looking at the camera with a genuine smile.

To make sure everyone feels comfortable, I guide you through each pose and expression, offering easy directions on posture and expressions. No awkward moments or “deer in the headlights” faces — just authentic, relaxed photos that reflect your family’s love and connection. Be prepared for some really bad jokes and silly on-liners.

After your session I’ll carefully retouch and edit your photos. We’ll have a reveal where you’ll get to see your portraits in a slideshow and a gallery for selecting the images you’d like to purchase. I have digital options as well as print options.

There are so many beautiful places in Montgomery county to use for your family portrait session. Whether you’re looking for an urban vibe or a nature vibe, I’ve got a list of places that I love shooting.

Where Can We Have Our Family Portrait Session?

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Sessions are typically 45-50 minutes. Best to plan for 1-1.5 hours though to make time for cranky kids (or husbands).

  • I would bring makeup for touching up, anything for the kids to keep them smiling. Snacks and bribes for the little ones are great too!

  • Coordinated colors are best. You don’t need to match, but do coordinate. Creams, pastels, solid colors are great choices.

  • I have a few local spots that are beautiful. If you have spots that are family favorites or have an important place in your families story, I’m happy to photograph there. Keep in mind that most of DC is national park land and will require permits, no problem, but it does take some time to apply and get the permit.

  • Most of my clients are shy or anxious in front of a camera. I guide everyone through the process so there’s guesswork, and I’m not above sounding like a total dork to get kids to laugh.

  • Of course! Pets are just an important as anyone else to the family. If you want to bring the dog, or cat (that would be a first), I’m all for it.
