What Is The Best Age For Newborn Photography? Clarksburg Newborn Photography

Becoming a parent is one of the best things in life. With it comes a whirlwind of emotions. From all the anticipation of waiting for the arrival of your newborn to finally getting to snuggle with your little one. Here I share some insight on when the best time to have portraits taken is. I understand that every delivery is different and maybe you can’t make the ideal time, that’s perfect. There is never a bad time to start documenting your family’s story.

Having newborn portraits created is a beautiful way to capture these moments in an otherwise hectic time. The significance of these portraits goes well beyond just the portraits. They become cherished family heirlooms and reminders of a time when they were this small. Nothing makes me happier than to walk down the hall to kids room and get to go down memory lane with the printed portraits we have on the walls.

It’s not just the printed image or the album that holds this value. As your kids grow and get older, these images serve as a way to bring parents back to this moment in the families story. For me it’s the nostalgia of looking back in time that makes having these portraits made so important.

So the question is, what is the best age to have these portraits taken? Within the first two weeks is the ideal time. Your baby is still super sleepy and is easier to photograph. They also still stay in some of those curled up positions that you felt while pregnant with them. We love going through our baby pictures and hearing my wife say “That’s exactly how you were in my belly”. The boys get a kick out of hearing those stories now that they’re a little bit older.

If you don’t make the first two weeks, it’s not the end of the world. I’ve photographed 3-4 and even 6 month old babies. They’re just not as sleepy at that age so it can be more of a challenge, but that mostly means that I have to be quicker with the camera! The bonus here is that they’ve started to develop some personality and that can be fun to capture on camera. So if you need to wait a little bit longer before getting portraits done, that’s still great! We’ll still capture those serene moments between you and your baby.

My sessions are designed to move and you and your newborns pace. I don’t rush anything or force anything during a session. My style of photography is documentary so I like to capture moments as they come organically.

Newborn safety is number one in my studio. This is why I stay away from a lot of the poses you see on Instagram. The froggy pose with the baby holding it’s head up on it’s hands requires balance unless you have two parents holding it’s head up. Other photos with the baby balanced just don’t make me comfortable. This is why I keep my sessions more lifestyle and photograph natural poses.

So, I can not stress the importance of having a newborn portrait session. I think a year down the road as you’re all looking at the albums or walking past printed portraits on your walls you’ll be glad you did it.
