How to Prepare For Family Photos | Clarksburg Family Photography
If you’re wondering how to prepare for family photos, you’re not alone.
As a dad of two energetic boys, I understand how chaotic it can feel just to get everyone dressed not to mention in the car, and smiling at the same time.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful.
With just a little preparation, your session will feel relaxed, natural, and even fun.
Here’s how to make that happen.
Choose the Right Time of Day (For Your Family)
The best light matters — but let’s be honest, your kids’ moods matter more.
If golden hour falls right in the middle of meltdown time, we’ll adjust. The goal is happy, well-rested kids — not perfect sunset lighting.
When we plan your session, we’ll talk through:
Nap schedules
Bedtimes
When your kids are typically happiest
Beautiful images happen when everyone feels good.
Keep Outfits Coordinated — Not Complicated
You don’t need to overthink the family wardrobe.
The goal isn’t matching outfits — it’s harmony.
Choose:
2–3 complementary colors
Simple patterns, no Stussy sweaters!
Clothing you feel great in. If you have to take a deep breath while buttoning, leave em home!
If you feel amazing, you’ll look amazing.
Pro tip: Choose outfits a few days early so there’s no last-minute stress.
And yes — I’ll happily guide you if you’re unsure what works best for your location.
Rested Faces Photograph Better
A little extra sleep the night before will make all the difference.
Hydrate.
Go to bed early.
Keep the day low-key if possible.
I know “rested” and kids don’t typically go together — just do your best. A calm start sets the tone for the whole session.
Plan something you like to do as a family.
This one can be super fun. Do you all like to play board games together? Bring your faves along with you. Do you all play music together? Bring your guitar! Or whatever instrument you might be able to bring. Having an activity that you all can engage in together is a great way to get some candid moments of your family all engaged with one another.
Don’t Worry About Perfect Behavior
You don’t need children who sit still and smile on command.
You need connection.
I photograph in a documentary style — meaning we’ll do some gentle direction, but I’m mostly watching for authentic interactions.
The laugh after the tickle.
The hand squeeze.
The spontaneous hug.
That’s what makes portraits timeless.
The Most Important Thing
You don’t have to manage everything.
Once you arrive, I’ll guide you through the whole experience.
Your only job is to show up and love on your family.
